  • Harold Fitzherbert was the son of William Alfred and Fanny Fitzherbert; grandson of Sir William Fitzherbert.

Two brothers, Harold Lancelot Fitzherbert and Captain Wyndham Waterhouse Fitzherbert , were killed in WW1.

He was farming in the Argentine at the time the war broke out. He and his older brother enlisted with the 12th Royal Sussex Regiment. Beginning as a Lance Corporal he was commissioned into the 13th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment in December 1914; sent to the Front in March 1916, he received his full Lieutenancy a few days before his death. His brother was wounded a few days after his brother's death.

"Killed in action on June 30th, 1916, at Ypres, entered the School in January, 1905, having previously been at Marton. Though only here for just over two years, he was extremely popular, and his influence for good was already apparent. He went to England in 1907, and was at Marlborough until 1910. Returning to New Zealand, he studied farming, and in the following year left for the Argentine. He obtained a commission in the 16th Battalion of the Sussex Regiment." (In Memoriam, 1914-1918 [Wanganui Collegiate School]) AWMM
