    "Was at School in 1903, for one year only. After matriculating in 1904, he spent about two years in Wellington reading law, which he eventually abandoned in favour of farming. Later he sold his land and went over to Australia, where he enlisted in the 7th Queensland Battery leaving there in the original Expeditionary Force.
