Member of NZ 8th Brigade when it captured Mono Island, part of the Soloman Islands, in October 1943, he was also among the soldiers who overran a Japanese position in the jungle, seizing the mountain gun.Auckland War Memorial Museum holds a Japanese mountain gun captured by R.W.
