  • 'Lieut. Edward O. Mousley, Royal Field Artillery, taken prisoner at Kut el Amara and now a prisoner of war in Angora, Turkey in Asia; and 2nd Lieut. Frank Allsopp, 11th Squadron, Auckland Mounted Rifles, reported to have been captured by the Turks in the recent engagement at Katia. A postcard, dated July 18th, however, has since been received from him [E.O. Mousley] (on the 18th inst.) in which he stated that he was "weak from long trek and siege" and was in need of food and various comforts. These were immediately despatched to him through the International Red Cross Society at Berne and the Ottoman Red Crescent Society at Constaninople, and the information wsa at once cabled to New Zealand.' (Chronicles of the NZEF, 30 August 1916, page 7)

It is very difficult to obtain acknowledgements or communications of any kind from Prisoners of War in Turkey, but the American Ambassador has been extremely kind; and through his agency the men have been supplied with a weekly money allowance of 20 piastres (equal to 3s. 7d. English money) and clothing where needed.' (Chronicles of the NZEF, 30 August 1916, page 7). Chronicles of the NZEF, 15 September 1916, page 33 AWMM
