  • I have been transcribing a letter that my grandfather wrote to his wife in July 1917. He had been wounded in France and was eventually transported back to Walton, in England. In one part he writes " I was hoisted into bed there at 1.30am and very kindly received by a pleasant faced nurse who came from Hamilton, knew the Jameses and asked if I knew Barclay, of whose vicissitudes she was able to give me an account. She was, I think, about the nicest NZ nurse I have met, tho' they are all first rate. She had been at the work a good while and her last trip had been on the same transport with J.W.B and the 22nds. Her name is Sanderson". I looked up the records and found this entry for Ruth Sanderson, which seems to fit the timing. My grandfather was Gerard Henry Nicholls 18897. Susan Heke
