  • Memories of Thomas by Quentin Fogarty (his nephew).
My father (Edward Fogarty), loved to tell the story of how Thomas, then barely out of teens, walked up to the Prime Minister of New Zealand at the outbreak of the First World War and said he wanted to be a pilot in the fledging British Flying Corps. Now, if my father’s version of events is correct, Thomas’ bold approach paid off and the Prime Minister made a personal recommendation to the relevant military authorities. Again, according to my Dad, Thomas was one of just a handful of New Zealanders who were chosen to fight the Hun in the skies above France.
