Present at Orange River with horses and transport on 21 February 1900.

Left Cape Town aboard SS Tongariro on 8 June 1901 for Wellington, New Zealand.

Rejoined the Canterbury Mounted Rifles as 73 Sergeant Major and retired early in 1902.

Received the Colonial Auxilliary Forces Long Service Medal (20 years).

Returned to Standerton, South Africa, in 1905.

Served during the Union Dutch Rebellion, joining in 1914 and going up to Uppington; back to Pretoria; to German East Africa; to Cape Town; then followed General Botha to Windhoek when it was occupied. He remained in Windhoek and worked in a liquor store and later was in charge of stationery stores at the Windhoek post office.

He died on 8 April 1930 at Windhoek, after an illness lasting a few years, aged 61.

"Went with the First New Zealand Contingent to South Africa as Quartermaster-Sergeant. He was taken prisoner at Sanna’s Post, along with a number of other members of the First Contingent, on 30th March, 1900, and was taken to Pretoria. Was released on the 8th June, 1900. Before going with the First Contingent to South Africa, he belonged to the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, and is now Sergeant-Major of that Corps." (Inglis 1902)

The Auckland Museum Manuscripts Collection (MS 2004/68) contains the Will of Prosper Berland and a publication containing references to him.

Served in the South African Service Corps Transport & Remounts with the rank of Head Conductor (HD CDR) and was awarded a 1914-15 trio including the bi-lingual Victory Medal for his service in German East Africa during WW1.
