  • An article in the New Zealand Herald (25 October 2004) featured the story of the escape of New Zealand POWs in Greece in 1941. The names of the men involved in the escape were Mick Karup, Tom Freeman, John Lewis, Don Gladding, Sid Hey and Peter Martin (and one other unidentified). Mr George Bizos, a Greek who assisted the men in hiding prior to their escape on board a fishing boat from Kalamata, sought out the survivors or their families on a visit to New Zealand. The men were rescued by HMS Kimberley and taken to Alexandria, Egypt. The villagers of Vasilitsi followed the events with interest and Mr Bizos wished to make contact while in the country. The records of these man are linked on the database although some discrepancies exist between the names listed in the newspaper story and the enlistment details.
