He had previously belonged to the Nelson College Cadets, Kelburne Rifle Brigade, 1st Battalion Wellington Rifle Brigade, 5th (Wellington) Regiment and the 17th Ruahine Regiment. He was promoted to Captain with the 1st Battalion Wellington Regiment Volunteers and then promoted to Major 5th Wellington Regiment.Served as President of the Wellington R.S.A in 1940.
