  • Catherine Blackie was the daughter of Catherine Ann and Allan Blackie

    She trained as a nurse in Dunedin and was registered in 1910.

    Three of Catherine's brothers, John Gibbons Blackie, James Blackie and Donald Blackie also served in World War 1. James and Donald were killed.

    Marama then transfer to Moldavia for Suez. Ship name "Marama" from The Evening Post, May 23, 1915 listing the nurses and officers on the passenger list. Transfer to Moldavia.

    Nurse Blackie was a survivour of the Marquette tragedy, she was admitted on HMHS Grantully Castle and discharged at Alexandria, Invalided on Tahiti for New Zealand in November 1915.

    Worked at the Heliopolis House Hotel in Cairo, joined the New Zealand Stationary Hospital for duty in August 1916.

    Invalided to New Zealand on HS Maheno in March 1917. AWMM

    "Sister Catherine Blackie, whose death at Otaki was reported, was one of the New Zealand sisters aboard the ill-fated Marquette when that vessel was torpedoed in the Mediterranean. For about nine hours she was in the water before being rescued, and was supported by a lifebelt Which was thrown to her by the late Dr T Harrison.
    When the explosion occurred and the ship went down, Sister Blackie was with another nurse she was drawn right under the vessel and came up on the other side.
