      Very extensive wound right back over scapula with fractured scapula. Wound is extremely dirty and profuse discharge. X Ray shows transfuse fracture (?) of surgical neck of humerus impacted, large dirty exit, excised, cleaned bipped and left wide open. Entry wound not operated initially. Operation carried out, wound cleaned, several small loose fragments of bone removed, bipped and sutured. 30 April 1918: discharge from wound behind shoulder still profuse. Stitches have not held.   • Son of Charles and Selina Williams, originally from Cornwall.

    His father, Charles Williams was a mine manager in Thames, New Zealand.

    Fred and his wife Sylvia had two children, Jack and Sylvia Grace. The family lived in Hobsonville, Auckland from 1924-1954.

    According to family anecdotes, Fred came home to New Zealand on the Tahiti.

    Fred Williams had limited use of his right arm due to wounds received in the war and wore a quite large cottonwool pad on his shoulder to prevent a sharp bone from wearing through his skin for the remainder of his life. AWMM
