  • Fred Baker was one of 28 New Zealand servicemen who were court-martialled and sentenced to death during the First World War. This was commuted to a suspended sentence of fifteen years' Penal Servitude. After being Wounded in Action on 17 August 1918, his sentence was put into effect on 7 November 1917. Pugsley, ‘On the Fringe of Hell’, pp.350-51.
