  • John Burt was one of 28 New Zealand servicemen who were court-martialled and sentenced to death during the First World War. This was commuted to a sentence of ten years' Penal Servitude. He was sent to prison on 12 December 1916. Pugsley, ‘On the Fringe of Hell’, pp.350-51.
