  • James Williams was one of 28 New Zealand servicemen who were court-martialled and sentenced to death during the First World War. The Court Martial was later re-assembled and his charge reduced to Absence Without Leave. He was then sentenced to two years' Imprisonment with Hard Labour. Chosing instead to return to the line, he was Wounded in Action on 16 September 1916. Pugsley, ‘On the Fringe of Hell’, pp.350-51.
