  • Son of Adalina and Vincent Joseph FitzPatrick

Commanding Officer of 21 Infantry Battalion, November 1941.

Commanding Officer of 1 Battalion, Hauraki Regiment, 1942-44.

Commanding Officer of 1 Battalion, Waikato Regiment, 1943.

While defending Point 175 at Sidi Rezegh, Fitzpatrick's men were approached by a slow-moving column of tanks on 29 November 1941. The turrets were open and the crews, wearing berets, could be seen waving a friendly greeting. Fitzpatrick's men had been told to expect units of 1 South African Brigade all day and assumed that these tanks were friendly. They allowed the column to come within firing range, when suddenly the turrets were slammed shut and the tanks began firing. Fitzpatrick radioed for aid but could not get through and he was forced to withdraw what remained of 21 Battalion.

He completed his LLM in 1933 and went on to complete a Bachelor of Commerce in 1951. AWMM
