      DSO: NZ Gazette, 21 September 1944. Citation: "This officer has commanded 26 (NZ) Battalion since its formation in May 1940. He led it in action during the Greek Campaign with marked success and again during the campaign in Libya ... On the night 26/27 November [1941] the Battalion undertook another night advance against the strongly held enemy positions on the escarpment [at Sidi Rezegh]. There was a very large number of machine and anti-tank guns in the enemy position and both class of weapons were used with deadly effect against our troops. The nature of the attack and the time at which it was launched precluded any opportunity of supporting it by Artillery and machine-gun fire. The enemy gunners remained in action at their posts until our infantry had advanced literally right up to the muzzles of the guns and the battle was certainly the fiercest that this Brigade has ever experienced. Lieutenant Colonel Page was in the forefront of the attack and in the course of it he was very severely wounded. His magnificent courage and leadership were the outstanding factors which contributed to the great success which was achieved. Throughout all these operations Lieutenant Colonel Page was an inspiration to all his troops and to the whole Brigade Group. In every action he was everywhere on the battlefield. His cheerfulness under very trying circumstances, his utter disregard of danger, his indomitable determination to win and the skill with which he disposed of his forces were over and over again responsible for the very fine achievements of the battalion he commanded."   • Page represented New Zealand as an All Black during the 1931, 1932, 1934, and 1935 seasons. He served as captain during the 1934 All Black tour of Australia. He represented Wellington during these seasons as well.

  • James Russell Page was the father of three children- all girls. Prudence, Diana and Christine. He was the grandfather of six boys and two girls. Many of his grandchildren and great grandchildren have apart of his name in their name.
