  • Attended Wellington College.

    Played rugby for Wellington, 1905-1910.

    Member of the All Black rugby squad that toured Australia, 1910.

    Enlisted 1911 to 1914

    Transferred to NZ Regular Army, 29 July 1919.

    NZ Representative at the War Office, 1920-21.

    Served at the Staff College, 1921.

    NZ Quartermaster General (QMG), 1922-24.

    Between WWI and WW2, Avery obtained a Ford franchise and established Avery Motors, one of Wellington's largest automobile companies.

    Retired from active service in 1924 but re-enlisted as QMG during WW2 and rose to the rank of Brigadier.

    Haigh, J., and Polaschek, A. (1993) incorrectly spell Avery's middle name as Essau, it should be Esau. AWMM
