  • In 1938, NZ Post telegraphists were invited to join the Royal Naval Reserves (RNR). Ian joined and by the outbreak of war was fully trained.

    Served "on loan" to the Defence Department.

    Served overseas with other NZ Post telegraphists from the Royal NZ Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNZNVR), September 1939 - January 1946.
