Eastwood was a British citizen who enlisted with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) at the outbreak of World War 1. This was most likely because from 1912 he had been stationed in NZ as the Aide-de-camp for the NZ Governor-General. He served with NZEF from 1914-1918. He attained the rank of Major while with the NZ Forces.
Eastwood rejoined the British Army on 17 October 1918.
Served in North Russia, 1919.

Promoted to Colonel and appointed Commandant of Rifle Brigade Depot, 1931.
