      Member of the Order of British Empire (MBE) Gilbert Arthur Dampier H78644. Warrant Officer. Royal NZ Air Force N Z Services Medical Team CITATION – New Year Honours January 1977 Warrant Officer Dampier joined the RNZAF in 1957 as a State Registered Nurse. He previously served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War as an air gunner and is currently a senior medical assistant. He has seen service with the RNZAF in Singapore, with the ophthalmic team in South East Asia and with the New Zealand Medical Services Team in Binh Dinh Province, South Vietnam in 1969. Throughout this service, he has given service beyond the normal call of duty and has worked long hours to enhance the effectiveness of service provided by the units to which he has been attached. Warrant Officer Dampier’s loyalty and devotion to the improvement of the health and wellbeing of personnel has been a feature of his service. He has handled tasks with expedition and efficiency, yet in his dealings with patients and staff he has always managed to apply the human touch which has earned him a high level of respect in his specialist field. Notes to Citation Born Liverpool, England 27 Jan 1925. RAF 14 Nov 1943 to 20 May 1946. RNZAF 27 Jun 1957 to 17 Dec 1978. During his World War 2 service with the RAF, Flight Sgt Dampier served as a Parachute Jump Master with 117 Sqn RAF (Dakota) completing 190 sorties dropping personnel and supplies to advance Army units in Burma. In 1965, He was a member of the four-man RNZAF Ophthalmic Surgical team, led by Gp Capt Randal Elliott, touring Singapore, Malaya, Sarawak and Thailand, being awarded the Chief of Air Staff’s Commendation in Nov 1965 for his services to the team.
