DSO: NZ Gazette, 21 September 1944. Citation: "On the morning 24th October (1942) this officer commanded a MMG platoon at Miteiriya Ridge which was under such heavy tank and small arms fire that other support weapons could not get forward. Siting his platoon in an indirect fire position he established an O.P. in a derelict tank 150 yards inside the minefield. Although in the midst of a tank battle, he held his position and by establishing wireless and telephone communication with the battalion he was supporting, he kept its command fully informed of the situation during a bombing raid. With an utter disregard for his own safety he assisted the advance of the support troops by a barrage shoot of his own guns, and those of a neighbouring MMG Platoon, from the infantry mortar platoon and from "hull down" Bren carriers. The following morning a company of our infantry having become isolated and lost its officers, Lieutenant Gardiner was able to report their position and assist in their extraction, covering their withdrawal by fire from both his MMGs and from neighbouring tanks.
