  • My mother, Honour King, nee Toohill was the niece of Alfred Henry Herbert of Eketahuna. The most extensive descriptions of this great man are to be found in the book: It Happened In Eketahuna, by Wesley Parker, St John's Press, 1990 - specially Chapter 5, The Grocery Shop. Quote: He was the best known soldier in the district and on his return from the front he dismounted the train to be with his wife, who was known in the war areas for her services to the troops, to a tumultuous welcome, the school children all being allowed to join the crowd at the station…. He certainly did not bring back to his business any show of army rank …… he was a gentleman …. and well known as he owned three stores in the district. He was thoughtful, business-like and strict ……..
