  • After originally embarking for the Middle east with the Main Body, Caterer returned to New Zealand. He was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant and served as Permanent Quartermaster's Staff with three subsequent embarkations. The first ship was the Waitemata, which sailed 14 July 1917; the second ship was the Ulimaroa, which sailed on 8 February 1918; and the third ship was the Ruahine, which sailed on 17 August 1918.

    The Auckland Museum Library manuscripts collection contains a letter (MS 1061, folder 1, item 8) written by Caterer's friend , Ernest Edward Jolly (11/738), while convalescing at St Patrick's Hospital, Viletta, Malta, where he describes the events that led to them both being wounded in action at Gallipoli.
