  • Commissioned Lieutenant, 12 June 1901.

Returned to New Zealand, 31 May 1902, and joined the regular army.

Enlisted NZEF as a Major, 27 May 1916, with Otago Regiment.

Retired from NZ Army and moved to England. He later returned to Dunedin to farm.

Hickey died 36 days short of being 100 years of age. He was the last surviving officer of the NZ Contingents involved in the Anglo-Boer War.

Polaschek states in New Zealand and the Distinguished Service Order that Hickey enlisted on 6 May 1900. The official nominal roll for Hickey's unit states that he and his comrades embarked for South Africa on 24 March 1900 - it his highly unlikely he enlisted after embarking. One might therefore feel justified in questioning the other dates mentioned by Polaschek in regards to Hickey's war service. AWMM
