  • Son of Joseph and Marion Ovens

Once when Walter's unit had recently captured a German trench, he was half-asleep under a blanket in a dug-out when some other Allied troops started looting German corpses. The soldiers approached his body, apparently mistaking him for another of the enemy corpses, but when he stirred they ran off. Walter later realized he was lucky not to have been shot.

On another occasion Walter's unit was in the area where a train wreck had occurred. As they passed the locomotive, Walter spotted an undamaged magneto and managed to surreptitously sneak it into his pack. Although it was quite heavy, he lugged it all around Europe and managed to get it back to New Zealand with him. AWMM
