  • NB. The NZEF Nominal Rolls give Hurst's rank on enlistment as "Trooper". However, given the context of his previous and subsequent service, it seems unlikely that the roll is correct in this case.

Studholme gives his first rank as Captain, appointed 5 August 1914.

Promoted to Major, 8 August 1915

Briefly served as acting Commanding Officer (CO) of his regiment before returning to New Zealand in 22 October 1919

Promoted to Colonel and commanded 3 (Canterbury) Mounted Rifle Brigade, 1928-34

Recalled during WW2 as Commander of the Home Guard and as Commandant of Burnham Camp for a short period AWMM

  • Herbert's youngest son,
Robin Holmes Herbert Hurst, is my father.

He had much pride in Herberts' achievements fondly referring to him as
" the Colonel " and, in later life, enjoyed writing ANZAC day speeches in his memory.

Robin passed away 30th June 2019
