On the night of 17/18 April 1945 at the River Gaiana, a patrol from his squadron was sent across the river to investigate the far bank. The patrol was hotly contested by the enemy and was finally forced to withdraw leaving wounded men on the enemy side. Major MacIntyre immediately organised and personally led a vigorous counter-attack, inflicting many casualties on the enemy and enabled his wounded to be evacuated.
