    • Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) AWMM
DSO citation: "Prior to the offensive on October 23, 1942 (Alamein) this officer was struck down with dysentery. A few days before the offensive opened he returned to his unit obviously unwell. When the battled opened he was again back with the unit. Throughout the entire operation he was hardly absent from the front line, where he was to be found continuously assisting in organising anti-tank defence. On one occasion during a tank attack on our forward defence lines, due to casualties to nearby anti-tank guns, Lieutenant Colonel Mitchell quickly organised a crew on the spot and taking the layer's seat himself knocked out one dank, damaged another and caused a third to withdraw. His quick and gallant action undoubtedly saved the situation which might have become precarious as this part of the line was temporarily without 6 pounder defence. Throughout the campaign this officer has been continuously up and down the front line giving advice and assisting where possible on anti-tank defence. Under circumstances of reorganisation due to casualties and retraining due to the issue of new equipment, he has faced every contingency with determination. The personal example set by this officer and his devotion to duty have been an inspiration to all around him." (NZ Gazette, 21 September 1944) AWMM
