During the period under review he commanded his Battery with initiative; a splendid fighting officer, cool, brave and devotion [sic] to duty. His Battery was shelled every day during the Messines operations, but he never failed to keep it in action.   • Newman was promoted to Captain in 1916.

    He was promoted to Major and appointed Officer Commanding (OC) of No 8 Battery, New Zealand Field Artillery (NZFA), 12 June 1917.

    After WWI, he continued to serve as an artillery officer.

    During WWII, he served as the Commander of the North Fortress Area in New Zealand, 1941-42.

    He then transferred to the New Zealand Temp Staff and was appointed Commander Royal Artillery (CRA) of the Northern Military District (NMD), 1943.

    He transferred to the Reserve of Officers in February 1944. AWMM
