Despite stating a preference for joining the New Zealand Medical Corps, Lloyd was posted to 3 Battalion, Auckland Regiment, Territorial Forces.
On 27 December 1941, he transferred to the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), with which he served as a wireless operator and radar mechanic.
He served overseas with No 57 Radar Squadron, RNZAF, on Rendova Island in the New Georgia Group, Solomon Islands, from September 1943 to April 1944.
On 12 September 1953, Lloyd married Marie Tuckey, who had served as a nurse during WWII. They had one son and three daughters.
