  • Son of John Prior and Rachel (Orpen) Puttick of the United Kingdom.

    In WWI, Puttick first served with the Samoan Advance Party in Samoa, August 1914 - April 1915. After returning to New Zealand, he embarked again with 1 New Zealand Rifle Brigade (NZRB) for Egypt.

    Promoted to Major, December 1915.

    Promoted to Lt Colonel and Commanding Officer (CO) of 3 Battalion, NZRB, 12 October 1917.

    CO of 4 & 5 (Reserve) Battalions.

    After recovering from wounds in 1918, he served as Commandant of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade Depot.

    Puttick married Irene Lillian Dignan in Epsom, Auckland, New Zealand on 31 January 1919. They had three daughters.

    Commanded 4 NZ Infantry Brigade, Greece, January 1940 - August 1941.

    Returned to New Zealand and served as Chief of General Staff (CGS), New Zealand Forces, August 1941 - December 1945.

    Promoted to Lt General, April 1942. First New Zealand-born soldier to attain this rank.

    After WWII, Puttick wrote the official history for 25 Battalion, 2 New Zealand Expeditionary Force. It was published in 1960.
