  • Son of John Atkinson and Elizabeth Smith.

    Married Amelia Jane Skinner on 25 March 1856, at New Plymouth. They had three sons and one daughter.

    After Amelia's death in June 1865, Harry married his cousin Annie Smith on 13 June 1866, again at New Plymouth. This second marriage produced two sons and one daughter.

    Member of the House of Representatives, representing Grey and Bell, 1861-1864.

    Minister for Colonial Defence, 1864-1866.

    Member of the House of Representatives, representing New Plymouth, 1867-1869.

    Member of the House of Representatives, representing Egmont, 1872-1874.

    Minister of Crown Lands and of Immigration, 1874-1876.

    Premier, 1876-1877, 1883-1884, 1887-1891.

    Colonial Treasurer, 1875-1891 (intermittently).
