  • Son of Lieutenant-Colonel Francis Haultain, Royal Artillery, and Elizabeth Deane.

    Married Jane Alison Bell on 7 November 1844, in Agra, India. They had four sons and four daughters.

    During his term as Minister of Colonial Defense (1865-1869), he established the Armed Constabulary Force.

    In 1871 he was made trust commisioner under the Native Lands Frauds Prevention Act and paymaster for imperial pensions.

    Served on the committee that established the constitution of the Church of England in New Zealand (draughted 13 June 1857).

    Served on both the Auckland University council and the board of governors for Auckland Grammar School.

    In his later years, he was also the president of the Auckland Total Abstinance Society. AWMM
