    Promoted to Major in 1864, reported in Daily Southern Cross, Volume XX, Issue 2115, 30 April 1864, Page 4

    During the seige of Orakau, then-Captain Herford was shot in the forehead and was presumed dead. Upon being brought to the surgeon, who also pronounced him dead, Herford began to show signs of life. Having lost an eye due to his wounds, Herford appeared to make a complete recovery and was promoted to Major. Shortly, however, Herford relapsed and died. The post mortem revealed that the bullet had remained in his skull and caused an abscess which, in turn, caused his death.
