  • Married Grace Emily Wilson on 3 July 1934. They had three daughters, including a set of twins, one of whom died at only two days old.

    Joined the New Zealand Navy as a "Boy" (Cadet 12/A/1936) on 13 October 1926.

    Appointed "Boy 2nd Class", 1927.

    Posted to HMNZS Dunedin as "Boy 1st Class", 1928.

    Appointed Telegraph Operator, 1929.

    HMS Hood, 5 September 1932 - 14 March 1933.

    Transferred to HMS Courageous, Fleet Air Arm, 4 March 1935.

    Appointed Leading Telegraph Operator, 14 March 1935.

    HMS Achilles, 27 April 1936 - 18 October 1938.

    HMS Leander, 19 October 1938.

    Appointed Petty Officer Airman while serving aboard HMS Leander, 1938.

    Windleborn was serving aboard HMS Leander when war broke out in 1939.

    He was transferred to HMNZS Philomel, Auckland on 19 June 1942.

    He also served at RNZAF Hobsonville, Auckland, during his time on-shore.

    He was posted to HMS Kilindene, 11 May 1943 - 19 August 1943.

    He was transferred to HMS Bherunda, appointed Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Airman and served 20 August 1943 - 24 May 1945.

    He was transferred back to HMNZS Philomel on 25 May 1945.

    During his service as an airman with the Royal Navy, Windleborn survived three aircraft crashes and major surgery.

    Windleborn worked briefly at the Chittocks fizzy drink factory in Timaru after the war before becoming a linesman for Post and Telegraph until retirement. AWMM
