  • Willia Pake was born in Takahiwai in 1914 of Ngati Patuharakeke descent. He was one of a large group of local boys who enlisted, including his brother Rimi Paki and numerous cousins from the Mackie, Pitman, Kepa, Rata and Peters whanau.

After he returned home, Willie met and, in 1945, married Rihi Paea (Tottie) Brown of Pakiri. They had five children: Ben, Tamihana, John, Maraea and Paea. He worked on a number of manual jobs that included stints on some Maori Affairs development schemes and building the Whangarei Base Hospital. In the mid-1950s he returned to his father's farm at Mata. Whilst there, Ben began building a house but died before it was completed, in 1958 of tuberculosis. He was aged 44 years. ' AWMM
