  • Cyril Vernon Grant was born at Hoteo North, Wellsford, Northland. He was the grandson of Joseph & Ann Grant, who were among the original settlers, the Albertlanders (about 1865), Port Albert, Kaipara Harbour. Cyril was the second son of Robinson & Sarah Ada Grant (nee Wilson).

Cyril was educated at Hoteo North and Auckland Grammar School, Auckland. In his final year he gained the Principal's prizes for being first in mathematics and French. Cyril then worked for Campbell and Ehrenfired. Part of his job was to read The New Zealand Herald daily to Sir John Logan Campbell.

In his youth, Cyril had enlisted in the Territorials at Wellsford. He gained his commission as 2nd Lieutenant in 15th North Auckland Regiment. His attestation into Officers' Special Training Corps on 5 April 1917. Cyril served as a Machine Gun Training Officer at various camps - Hopuhopu; Trentham; Featherston and elsewhere throughout NZ. He had volunteered on enlistment for active service, had a number of final leaves (the last being on 29 October 1917) but was retained in NZ because machine gun training Officers were required in NZ.

In 1919 Cyril purchased a 100 acre farm on Karaka North Road, Karaka. This farm remained in family hands until 1969. Cyril then shifted to Hingaia Road, Papakura, in 1969 where he remained until shortly before his death. He was survived by his wife Hazel May Grant (nee Laing) and six children.

The Nominal Roll lists Cyril's occupation at enlisted as a farmer and his last NZ address as Hoteo North, Rodney. AWMM
