  • William Malcolm was the son of William Alexander Malcolm and Herilda Malcolm (nee Herbert). The family arrived in New Zealand in November 1927 and lived at 23 Corbett Scott Avenue, Epsom, Auckland.

    W.F. Malcolm was educated at Orbost State School from 1923-1927;

    Epsom District School from 1928-1930;

    47247 L/Sergeant John Herbert Malcolm was William's brother.

    William's brother-in-law was 555959 Sydney August James Jansen.

    William served in New Zealand at Harewood, Wigram, Rongotai and Ardmore.

    Seddon Memorial Technical College, 1931-32, and for one term in 1933.

    The following extract is from notes written by W.F. Malcolm for a family history: 'Work was hard to find during the Great Depression and at 17 years of age I signed up for a 5 year apprenticeship in the shoe trade. In 1941 I joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a Flight Rigger, served in New Zealand and overseas and was discharged after the war in November 1945. In 1947 Pat and Frank O'Dowd and self started Pressure Die Casters Ltd. Sold Pressure Die Casters in 1971 and retired at age 65 years in 1982.

    Note by Paul Baker: early on in this company an oil furnace caught fire, William was seriously injured, while of the O'Dowd brothers died as a result of the injuries he sustained in this fire.

    In 1952 William married Beverly Joyce Bernie. They had 3 sons and 1 daughter. AWMM

  • Dear Dad. You were such a wise and good father. You told me and my brothers many stories about your service in the South Pacific, but never the scary parts, of which I am sure there were many. You are very brave. Gone but not forgotten. Love, Lynley xx
