  • Husband of Kath; father of Barbara and Margaret; son of Mrs M.L. and Mr G.H. Kidd

Enlisted 1939, apparently on the second day of recruiting

Kidd recalled being with D Company at embarkation

"After the Italian armistice in September 1943 I escaped from Campo P.G. 107 with two other New Zealanders and we were sheltered by an Italian family for two months in a village called Virco, near Udine. Germans and Fascists raided the village but we managed to evade capture. However a week later, when we were on our way to Switzerland, we were recaptured and taken to Germany.

In 1954, I managed to get entry to New Zealand for one of the sons of the Italian family who sheltered us. In 1957, he returned to Italy & married an Italian girl and then returned to NZ. He worked hard and brought up a family of four. He is a respected citizen."
