Captain H.A Davies, N.Z.F.A., who was killed in France on September 14th, came from Wanganui. He was sent to England by the New Zealand Defence Department four years ago to undergo a course of training with the Imperial Army, and he was just about to return to New Zealand when war broke out. He was sent with the original B.E.F. to France in August 1914, and after six months there he was transferred to the N.Z.E.F., with whom he went through the Dardanelles campaign. Captain Davies was an excellent soldier, and his death is indeed a loss.Chronicles of the N.Z.E.F, Records of Matters Concerning the Troops and Gazette of Patriotic Effort. No.5, October 30th, 1916.
