  • Tom was a step-brother of my Mother Enid Bennett (nee Aitken). He went to WW1 and the family history that after the war he went farming like a lot of former soldiers. But I was told that he had been gased in the European war and the trenches and on returning home was not well, The farming venture in the valley near Wanganui was not successful and his father (my Grandfather James Aitken B.A retired School headmaster),felt that he had to pay his debts.

I understand later that Tom lived is a rest home in Wellington, although I don't recall him ever being talked about as still living, although by that time I was 10 years old. Sadly, I guess another life ruined by war and who knows who else in his family as the family record i have created shows that he was married and had children about which I know nothing.
