    Embarked from Alexandria for England, 30 May 1916.
    Proceeded overseas to France, 9 October 1916; joined 2nd Bn, Canterbury Regiment, in the field, and posted to No 1 Company, 25 October 1916, and relinquished rank of Temporary Sergeant.
    Appointed Temporary Sergeant, 9 December 1916; promoted Sergeant, 4 February 1917.
    Wounded in action (second occasion), 7 June 1917 (gun shot wound, chest), and admitted 9th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 26th General Hospital, Etaples, 9 June 1917 (listed as 'seriously ill'); removed from 'seriously ill' list, 4 July 1917; transferred to England; transferred to Hornchurch Convalescent Hospital, 7 July 1917; marched out from Hornchurch, 29 July 1917, to report to Codford, 13 August 1917.
    Tried by District Court Martial, 14 September 1917: pleaded guilty to charge of being absent without leave when granted leave to expire 8 am, 24 August, failed to report, and remained absent without leave until about 6 pm, 29 August: sentenced to be reduced to rank of Corporal, and forfeited 6 days' pay.
    Marched in to Sling Camp from Codford, 3 October 1917.
    Proceeded overseas to France, 11 November 1917.
    Wounded in action, 26 March 1918 (third occasion; shrapnel wound, left arm: severe compound fracture), and admitted to No 6 Stationary Hospital, and transferred to No 1 Canadian General Hospital, 27 March 1918; transferred to England, 28 March 1918, and admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 31 March 1918. Transferred to Hornchurch Convalescent Hospital, 3 April 1918; discharged to Command Depot, Codford, 22 April 1918.
    Proceeded overseas to France, 26 May 1918.
    Transferred to 2nd Entrenching Bn, 30 May 1918.
    Wounded in action (fourth occasion), 4 September 1918 (gun shot wound, left leg); admitted to 10th General Hospital, Rouen, 6 September 1918; transferred to England, 7 September 1918, and admitted to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 8 September 1918; transferred to Hornchurch Convalescent Hospital; discharged on furlough, 28 October 1918, to report to Codford, 12 November 1918.
    Commenced return to New Zealand from Plymouth on board 'Briton', 24 December 1918; discharged, 26 February 1919.
