    • William Dawbin was the son of William and Julia Dawbin, of Awahuri, Manawatu, New Zealand.

Roll of Honour 1915 records place of death as Netley Hospital, Southamption AWMM
    • William Dawbin was the son of William and Julia Dawbin, of Makino near Feilding, Manawatu, New Zealand. He was born in Somerset, England circa 1888, and is the brother of Walter George Boon Dawbin, who also served in World War I. The family immigrated to New Zealand in the late 1890s, They farmed firstly at Hunterville, Rangitikei district where William served in the Hunterville Mounted Rifles, 1905 - 1910. In 1912 they moved to Makino near Feilding. William was working as a farmer there for his father on his enlistment in 1914. He joined the Wellington Mounted Rifles and served in Gallipoli from the 12th - 27th May 1915. There he received a gunshot wound in his back which left him paralyzed from the waist down. He was evacuated to Netley Hospital in England with the understanding he was terminally ill. William died from pneumonia at Netley Hospital on the 22nd August 1915. His parents in New Zealand, having heard of the seriousness of his wounds, travelled to England arriving in September. William was buried in Somerset. His marble headstone in England features a carved horse, spurs and other Mounted Rifles symbols. A carved wooden / treen copy of this headstone is still held by his family in New Zealand; it serves as a frame for William's photo.
