    • James Dawes was the son of James and Esther Dawes, of "Rosslyn," Park View Rd., Alphington, Victoria, Australia. Native of Melbourne, Victoria.

Next of Kin: Mrs J. Dawes, Howe St, Auckland (Roll of Honour, Auckland Province 1914-1918 (Volume 1)) AWMM
    • A Death Notice in the Melbourne Argus has him as "the third son" of James and Esther Dawes "late of Clifton Hill". the rest of the family William (Longwood), Mrs, J. Paterson (Emu Flat), Ernie (on active service) and Arthur. Both of his parents were born in England.

There were two servicemen by the name of Ernest Dawes that enlisted with the A.I.F., but neither had connection to James, presumably "Ernie" was Ernest Henry Dawes, 11 Auckland Infantry Regiment, also listed with a wife in New Zealand and noted as born in Australia.

A brief record suggests that James and his widow were married on 22 May, 1915 and lists her as Edith Dawes, spinster and it is not known if she was related in some way. She is later noted as Mrs Astley in September, 1921 when medals were distributed.

DEATHS ON ACTIVE SERVICE. DAWES — Killed in action somewhere in France, Private James Dawes, third loving son of James and Esther Dawes, "Rosslyn," Park View road, Alphington (late of Clifton Hill), dearly loved husband of Edith; loving brother of Will, Longwood; Mrs. J. Paterson, Emu Flat; Ernie (on active service), and Arthur. Duty nobly done. Our dear Jim.
