  • Arthur was born in Dunedin on 7 July 1883. He enlisted in 1914 and served with Otago Mounted Rifle before transferring to New Zealand Field Artillery. Throughout his military service Arthur endured prolonged exposure to cold and wet. As a consequence he suffered from articular Rheumatism requiring frequent hospital treatment. After undertaking 2 years 100 days military duty he was discharged.
