Biographical information
- Oct 1919 - A pretty wedding was solemnised at St. Andrew's Church, Gisborne, this afternoon, by the Rev Mr Murray, of Matawhero, when Miss Marian Elizabeth Russell, daughter of Mr J. Russell, of Matawhero, was married to Mr Wilfred Alex Bayley, son of Mr G. H. Bayley, of Opanae. Misses Dunn and Russell were bridesmaids and Mr W Russell (brother of the bride) was best man. Mr McNab was groomsman. After the ceremony at the church the party adjourned to Findlay's tea rooms, where the breakfast was held. - 9 July 1917 - RETURNED FROM THE FRONT.
Four more Gisborne soldiers returned home yesterday, coming from. Auckland by the SS Arahura Their names are: Sergt Major W Graham Corporal W Bailey, Privates M. R Walters and W J Foster They were met by Messrs R M Birrell, and A H Wallis, on behalf of the Defence Committee, and Mr J B Erskine secretary of the Returned Soldiers' Association.
Corporal W Bayley was farming in the Opotiki district when he left with the draft of Frontiersmen who were attached to Otago's Second Reinforcements. He participated in the Gallipoli campaign, being amongst the last lot of men to leave the peninsula at the time of the evacuation. He subsequently went to France as a member of the Cavalry Squadron attached to the New Zealand Infantry Division. He was one of the fortunate ones in that he escaped from bullet and shell, but he injured his knee and also suffered from internal troubles which necessitated his being invalided home.
