    • "Educated at Takapau before he came to this School, joined the staff of the Bank of N.S.W. at Napier shortly after he left. Always keen on military service, he at one time was determined to make the Army his profession. He enlisted before he was eighteen, but was rejected. On his transfer to Christchurch he again volunteered, and was accepted for service, going into Trentham as a N.C.O. He was considered rather young for the work, however, and returned to the ranks. This did not deter him, and he left New Zealand with the 2nd Battalion of the N.Z. Rifle Brigade. He died from a shrapnel wound in the back, his being the only casualty in a party of twelve who were detailed to replace some wire entanglements in 'No-Man's Land.' Before going to Europe he had seen six months' service in Egypt." (In Memoriam, 1914-1918 [Wanganui Collegiate School])
