  • "Entered camp as a private in one of the initial battalions of the N.Z. Rifle Brigade, but his ability soon earned him higher rank, and he left the country as 2nd Lieutenant. He came to the School at the beginning of 1901, and on leaving went into an architect’s office, where he met with considerable success, gaining several prizes in open competition. Apart from his ordinary work, he was an enthusiastic rifle shot and a good cricketer. After leaving New Zealand he took part in the Egyptian fighting, moving later with his battalion to France, where he saw practically all the fighting in which the New Zealanders were engaged, having only one short holiday in England. He was made a Captain some months later, an appointment that was most popular, as indicated by several letters received from those who served with him, which speak of his fine qualities and extraordinary cheerfulness under all circumstances. He fell on October 4th, 1917." (In Memoriam, 1914-1918 [Wanganui Collegiate School])
