  • I believe James Desmond stayed with my grandmother's family at Ruapuna, Mid Canterbury before he left for the Western Front. He gave each of the girls in the Conway family a brooch before he left. I have my grandmothers one and a cousin who has her mother's brooch told me the the story of Jim Desmond and his visit to Ruapuna and that he died in action in France. The Conway girls had a group photo taken, each wearing their brooches Jim had given them, R.I.P. James Desmond you live in in our family.
