  • War service (NZEF): sailed with Samoan Advance Guard; arrived Apia, 29 August 1914.
    Discharged, 17 September 1914.
    War service (NZEF): 24 days (of which 18 days were abroad)
    Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal
    Soldier subsequently said (letter to Base Records, Wellington, 9 March 1960) he joined the British Army, served with 4th Bn, South Wales Borderers, for 4 months at Gallipoli; was discharged at the end of the war with the rank of Major, the Military Cross, and 2 Mentions in Despatches. Base Records advised, 15 March 1961, that confirmation of these details had to be obtained from the War Office, London. AWMM

  • 100 years today Grandpa it was over and you returned to Fiji to marry Leila Duncan. Miss you and Granny, so proud of you.

  • My grandfather also served in the 9th battalion of The South Wales Borders in 1915. Was also given MC and a CMG.
    Public - Suejane - Other Relative - 24 April 2015
  • Also served in Gallipoli, Dardenelles, Ypres, survived WW 1, wounded, shot in the face repaired by Dr Gillies, returned to Suva Fiji, became Director of Fijian Affairs, died in 1966 approx in Suva Fiji.
